Good Wishes Quilt

To our family and friends,

As some of you already know, we are in the middle of our journey to adopt a baby.  With all of our paperwork done, our home study finalized, and our foster care license in hand, we begin the hardest part of this process- the wait to find a child.

While waiting for a baby to join our family, we attended some seminars.  At one of the seminars we learned about a wonderful tradition that waiting families take part in- creating a 100 Good Wishes Quilt.

To welcome and celebrate a new life, there is a tradition in the northern part of China to make a 100 Good Wishes Quilt.  It is a custom to invite friends and family to contribute a patch of cloth with a wish for the baby.  Most of the square is sewn into the quilt, while a small piece of the fabric goes into a scrapbook with the wish for the child.  The quilt contains the luck, energy, and good wishes from all of the families and friends who contribute.  The quilt is then passed down from generation to generation.

We loved this idea and would love very much for our family and friends to be a part of this tradition with us.  We cherish the idea of welcoming a child into our home with a quilt that represents the good wishes from our family and friends.

If you would like to help us create this quilt, here is what we need:

·         One piece of fabric, at least 8”X8” square (or larger)-something that you particularly like or that has a special meaning to you.  It can be new or “used and meaningful” fabric.  Please limit the print size of the fabric to small or medium (it is hard to cut very large patterns to fit the finished squares).  And please, feel free to send more than one fabric and message if you so feel inspired.

·         A written good wish on a separate sheet of paper or card.  Your wish can be simple or elaborate, handwritten or typed.  It can be an original thought or blessing that you write, or something you like such as a favorite poem, lyric, Bible verse or blessing- the important thing is that it comes from you.  Please send a picture too for the memory book if you would like!

We are hoping to have all of our pieces by the end of August so send your fabric anytime soon.  Also, be sure to keep us in mind if you hear about a possible adoption situation.

If you would like to send us a quilt piece, please e-mail us with a subject related to Quilt Piece and we will send our address.  E-mail us at erinandtimdeets@polo222.org.

Thank you in advance for helping us with this special project! We will try to post pictures of the pieces we receive.

Love,
Erin and Tim
